IPL Match 3: Preview and Prediction: Gujarat Lions vs Kolkata Knight Riders

For the third match of Indian premier league, we will be heading towards Rajkot the home ground of Gujarat Lions. Gujarat Lions is one of the newbies of IPL unlike Pune Supergiant they have impressed a lot of people with their performances last year. Their first clash is with the two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders. Last year Kolkata Knight Riders were eliminated just after the round robin leagues but they would love to change the course of their IPL 2017.

Gujarat Lions have some major injury concern in their squad and they will miss out the service of Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo for initial few games. On the other hand, Kolkata too will be without the service of their prime all-rounder Andre Russel who fell in an anti-dope test. Umesh Yadav who had great test season recently is also sidelined for few games due to the sore back problem. So both teams will be without their few prime players and would be interesting to watch how they capitulate without them.

Last time they played:

Last time when they were against each other, Gujrata Lions won the match pretty comfortably and achieved the target within 13.3 overs and 6 wickets to spare. Riding on the captain’s knock of Suresh Raina Lions chased down the target of 125 rather easily. Before Kolkata Knight Riders were bundled out for 124 and the only player who scored more than 30 was Yusuf Pathan.

Head to head:

The two teams have met two times before at the IPL 2016 and both the times Gujarat Lions won the match quite easily. Gujarat Lions have the upper hand over Kolkata Knight Riders in both the home and away matches.

Kolkata Knight Riders: LWLLW

Team Preview:

Gujarat Lions: This team has got the best options for choosing their opening pair. With the likes of Aaron Finch, Dwayne Smith, Brendon McCullum and Jason Roy, they have plenty of options to choose from. The tricky part is that max 3 out of 4 can be chosen to play. The middle order is exceptionally backed up by Suresh Raina who is in the whole different form in Indian premier league and Dinesh Karthik who had a great domestic season. Ishan Kishan and James Faulkner can be handy at the end. Gujarat Lions had some injury issues that why Bravo and Jadeja would be missing from the squad. And their bowling would be heavily dependent on Praveen Kumar, Dhawal Kulkarni, and Shivil Kaushik. Last season Gujarat Lions were on fire and this year too they would like to start with a bang.

Probable XI: Brendon McCullum, Dwayne Smith, Jason Roy/Aaron Finch, Suresh Raina(capt), Dinesh Karthik, Ishan Kishan, James Faulkner, Dhawal Kulkarni, Praveen Kumar, Shadab Jakati/Nathu Singh, Shivil Kaushik

Kolkata Knight Riders: The major setback right at the start of the season was that of Andre Russel sidelined due to failing in Dope test while they were recently hurt with one more injury concern of that of Umesh Yadav. KKR have the most reliable opening pair in the form of Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa. Manish Pandey, Surya Kumar Yadav will make the next two. There will be no Shakib for the first match as he is out on national duty. Ishank Jaggi who had great domestic season can get a game so as solidify the batting. Chris woakes will probably take the place of Andre Russel and him along with Yusuf Pathan will have the responsibility to fire at the lower order. The spin department is heavily dependent on Sunil Narine and KKR can play with as many as three spinners including Kuldeep Yadav and Piyush Chawla. With the absence of Umesh Yadav, Ankit Singh Rajput or Rishi Dhawan could get a game. Trent Boult would be the fourth overseas player to play in the match. Kolkata knight riders had an average season last year and they would love to achieve a new high.
